At the International Ice Hockey Federation, ensuring the safety of everyone on the ice is a constant priority, and a key part of that commitment is a concept known as Rescue On Ice (ROI).

While many fans might recognize ROI as “Return on Investment,” in the ice hockey world it stands for something much more important. Rescue On Ice is the coordinated medical response used when a player, referee, or staff member suffers a serious injury during a game. In those critical moments, every second matters - and the response is immediate. Play is stopped without hesitation, and trained medical personnel enter the ice to assess the situation, stabilize the injured individual, and ensure safe and efficient evacuation from the playing surface.

What makes ROI especially effective is not just the speed of the response, but the preparation behind it. At every IIHF event, the home team medical staff and the event’s dedicated medical team work side by side, following clearly defined protocols. These procedures are not improvised, they are carefully planned and rehearsed in advance, ensuring that when an emergency occurs, the response is smooth, coordinated, and precise.

To give fans and stakeholders a closer look at this essential aspect of the game, the IIHF has produced two new videos to help promote consistent standards and readiness across all competitions. One focuses on the educational foundations of Rescue On Ice, while the other shows how the protocol is applied in a real on-ice scenario. You can find them here: Video 1 and Video 2.

Rescue On Ice is a reminder that beyond the intensity and excitement of the game, there is a dedicated system working quietly in the background - one built on expertise, teamwork, and care. It’s an essential part of modern ice hockey, ensuring that the sport remains not only thrilling to watch, but safe for everyone involved.
