The IIHF’s Historical Committee held a virtual Extraordinary meeting earlier this week and voted unanimously to induct Luc Tardif into the IIHF Hall of Fame. He will be inducted as a Builder next month during the annual ceremony at the World Championship.
Tardif has been the IIHF president since 2021 but last month announced that he would not seek re-election. The Historical Committee thus saw an opportunity to honour him for a lifetime of service to hockey.
He will be joined by Players Andres Ambuhl, Patrice Bergeron, Cassie Campbell-Pascall, Niklas Kronwall, Florence Schelling, and Thomas Vanek and another Builder, Ralph Krueger.
Growing up in Quebec, Tardif was an outstanding player in his teens. He began his professional playing career in Belgium in 1975 and moved to France two years later to play for Chamonix. He stayed there for seven seasons, leading the league in scoring four times and helping the team win two national championships.
Tardif became a naturalized French citizen and continued to play until 1990, after several seasons as a player-coach with Rouen. After retiring as a player, Tardif continued to live in Rouen and worked in the construction business as a commercial engineer. In 1993 he started to coach minor hockey and later became president of the minor hockey association.
In 2000, he started what would become the most important part of his hockey life. He was hired by the French Ice Sports Federation as the head of the hockey department. Tardif, however, saw the limitations that ice hockey had when operating under this umbrella organization which oversaw all skating sports in France.
Tardif worked tirelessly to establish an independent organization for ice hockey, which finally was established in 2006. He served as the president of the French Ice Hockey Federation (FFHG—Federation française de hockey sur glace) for 15 years, during which time he brought stability and greater popularity to the top French league, Ligue Magnus.
Tardif’s work with the IIHF started in 2008 when he joined the Competition Committee. Two years later, he was named to Council, and he was made IIHF Treasurer in 2012. Four years later, he became Chairperson of the Finance Committee.
In 2021, Tardif successfully ran for the vacant position of IIHF president at the Semi-Annual Congress, after which he created a mandate called Ice26. Among the many initiatives he helped develop, key was bringing the NHL back into the Olympic fold, which he accomplished for Milano 2026.
He also was a strong supporter of 3x3 hockey as a new discipline, with the most important ambition to make this a new Olympic event. He helped re-imagine the purpose of international breaks in the hockey calendar while also focusing on doping, competition manipulation, elimination of racism, and other ethical initiatives to help hockey develop worldwide.
After more than half a century in hockey, as a player and administrator, Tardif leaves the game healthier for his contributions and his dedication to making the game better, on ice and off.
