The preliminaries are over, and the 2026 IIHF U18 Men’s World Championship is reaching the business end.

From now on, it’s win-or-bust as eight teams advance to the quarter-finals. Read on for a run-down of all the action on Wednesday.

Bratislava
Czechia vs Finland, 12:00

The first quarter-final to face off will be the Czechs and Finns in Bratislava at high noon. Czechia finished second in Group B following impressive wins over the USA and Sweden and a misstep against Germany. Finland was the only team to beat host Slovakia in Group A but fell big to Canada on the last day with a chance to move up in the standings.

When they’re on their game, the Czechs have played a tenacious forechecking style that frustrated their opponents. At the same time, the Finns are always known to play a relentless team game, and therefore, this feels like a matchup that really could go either way.

When the teams met in last summer’s Hlinka Gretzky Cup, the Finns won 4-1 with many of the same players from both teams in the lineup. Oliver Suvanto had a goal and an assist for Finland.

USA vs Latvia, 16:00
Of the four quarter-finals, the USA is certainly the biggest favourite to advance over its opponent. It would be a mistake, however, for the Americans to take Latvia lightly. Not only did Latvia lower the boom on Norway to the tune of 8-1, but they also battled well against Canada, Finland and Slovakia. The feisty Baltic team is never an easy out, especially when it comes to the big games.

“We feel pretty great because we’re not in relegation,” said forward Kristers Obuks. “We’re here to do big things and I hope we can do something sensational.”

The USA started slowly this tournament with an overtime loss to Czechia and a narrow 2-0 win over Denmark, but hit its stride against Sweden and Germany, outscoring them 20-3 combined. Wyatt Cullen is tied for the tournament scoring lead with eight points, but the Americans have no shortage of big guns.
Slovakia hopes its celebrations will continue into the weekend.

Canada vs Sweden, 14:00

Sometimes it’s best not to poke the big beasts. Canada looked vulnerable in its opening night loss to Slovakia, but rallied strongly to reel off big wins over Latvia (6-0), Norway (8-0) and, somewhat surprisingly, Finland (7-0). Sweden had a similar story in Group B, suffering a horrendous 1-9 loss to the USA before rebounding to thump Denmark.

Sweden found its scoring touch after creating a stellar line with centre Alexander Command flanked by Marcus Nordmark and Elton Hermansson. They combined on six of Sweden’s 10 goals against the Danes and could be the biggest threat to a parsimonious Canadian defence.

Canada allowed just two goals in four group games and will be tough to break down once again. Offensively, the Dima Zhilkin – Tynan Lawrence partnership has impressed, while Adam Valentini chipped in some big goals.

Slovakia vs Denmark, 18:00
These teams met in a pre-tournament exhibition game and Slovakia powered to a 7-0 victory over the Danes. That was a handy confidence boost for the host nation, and it went on to top Group A. Denmark, promoted from Division IA last season, has secured top-flight status for the first time since it was saved in relegation in 2004.

The Danes have frustrated big names – witness a battling 0-2 loss against the USA. That came right after a defining 4-1 victory over Germany. Since then, things have been tougher, with blow-out losses against Czechia (1-9) and Sweden (1-10). Goalie Anton Wilde, huge in the opening two games, will be a key figure.

Slovakia, meanwhile, is relishing home advantage. Playing high-energy hockey, scoring freely and feeding off the energy in the Pavol Demitra Stadium, this team believes it can take its first U18 medal since 2003. Timothy Kazda’s scoring has been significant so far; he’ll fancy adding to his tally in the last eight.

Relegation round: Germany vs Norway, 10:00
A busy day of hockey starts at 10:00 local time with the survival showdown between Germany and Norway. The two nations finished bottom of their groups and face a one-off battle to preserve their place in the top division.

This is familiar territory for Norway, which has survived a relegation playoff in each of the last three tournaments. Last season it took a shoot-out verdict over Switzerland. The Norwegians’ current run started in 2023 when it defeated Germany in a three-game series in Porrentruy. The Germans bounced straight back in 2024 and reached the quarter-finals last season in Texas.
