The tournament directorate has finalized the schedule for the semi-finals of the women’s Olympic hockey tournament. Both games will be played at Santagiulia on Monday, 16 February.

The early game will feature the United States and Sweden at 16.40 and the late game will be Canada-Switzerland at 21.10.

The two winners will play for gold on Thursday, 19 February at 19.10, and the losers will play earlier that day, at 14.40, for bronze. These games will also be played at Santagiulia.

The Americans are undefeated (5-0) and have nine of the top 14 scorers in the tournament, led by Caroline Harvey with nine points. They have outscored their opponents 26-1 and are determined to get back to their fifth straight gold-medal game.

The Swedes will be looking to 2006 for inspiration. Recall it was that year, with the Olympics in Turin, that the Swedes pulled off the greatest upset in women’s hockey by defeating the U.S. in a shootout in the semi-finals. They will need a similar miracle on Monday if they are to play for gold.

Canada are the defending gold medal champions from 2022 and have won gold five of the last six Olympics. But they lost to the Americans, 5-0, in the preliminary round a few days ago and still need to up their level if they are to repeat as champions again this year.

For Switzerland, the opportunity is enormous. They will be playing for a medal of some colour on Thursday, but beating Canada in the semis will pose an unprecedented challenge. In Olympics and World Women’s play combined, they are 0-19 against Canada with a goals differential of 9-133.
