Canada, the defending Olympic champion, has never lost an Olympic playoff game – except for the 1998 and 2018 gold medal games versus the U.S. – dating back to the inaugural 1998 women’s tournament in Nagano, Japan.
The U.S., the defending world champion, suffered its only Olympic playoff loss to a non-Canadian opponent in 2006, falling 3-2 to Sweden in a semi-final shootout.
The Finns, who won their fourth Olympic bronze medal in 2022, are eager to keep their medal hopes alive. Switzerland is aiming to medal the first time since its historic run to bronze at the 2014 Olympics. Finland beat Switzerland 3-1 in the 2026 preliminary round.
The Czechs, who won bronze at the 2022 and 2023 IIHF Women’s World Championships, are seeking their first Olympic medal in their second Olympic participation (2022 being their first).
Germany has never won an Olympic women’s hockey playoff game. Host Italy is competing in its second Olympics – after finishing eighth in Turin 2006 – and its first Olympic quarter-final.
